To the sun, to the risen
is a musical setting of the poem of the same name by Pulitzer-winning poet Franz Wright
(from his 2001 poetry collection, God's Silence
I was attracted to this poem for its rich, dark ambiguities around love and faith, but also for the wealth of physical motion
evoked by the text. There is stillness, cyclicality, momentum, as well as a bit of word-play on the ordering of
words (which make for exciting rhythmic possibilities). This piece was composed for the New York Virtuoso Singers under the direction
of Harold Rosenbaum.
