Taqsim

2007

for clarinet and electronics (fixed)

Written for clarinetist Cristhian Rodriquez.
Studio recording by Cristhian Rodriguez.

program note:

Taqsim was one of the first pieces I composed for solo instrument and fixed electronics, yet many of the stylistic and technical ideas that came out of writing this piece were ones that stuck with me for years afterwards. The piece unfolds like a ricercare, where the final melody (played by the Bb clarinet) is gradually built by the bass clarinet. The title, 'taqsim' is an improvisational prelude form in Middle-eastern traditions, and reflects some of the Klezmer-esque influences on the melodic writing in this piece. This piece was written for Cristhian Rodriguez.
