Piano Trio (Taijitu)

2008

for violin, cello, and piano

Composed for Ecce.
Live recording by Ecce.

program note:

Piano Trio #1 (Taijitu) is a 13-minute composition in two movements of roughly equal length. The two movements oppose each other through many of their musical characteristics, but ultimately rely on each other to make a complete journey through the development of thematic material. Each movement also contains a formal interruption with characteristics of the opposite movement. In this way, the structure of the piece is inspired by the idea of the unity of opposites central in Taoist philosophy; hence, the title's reference to the familiar icon of Yin and Yang. Taijitu was composed in winter of 2008 for the East Coast Composers Ensemble.
