Anonymous Dances

Concert suite from HackPolitik

Approximate duration: 25 minutes

scored for flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, piano, percussion, and electronics

program note:

Anonymous Dances is a concert suite of music excerpted from the full-length electroacoustic ballet, HackPolitik. HackPolitik tells the story, through electroacoustic music and dance, a series of cyber-attacks carried out by the 'hacktivist' collective Anonymous in 2010 and 2011, and the rise and fall of splinter group LulzSec. The aim of HackPolitik was to bring the intense political drama of these recent events –events occurring entirely in cyberspace-- to a physical place, where the the characters' online personae and their exploits could take physical form.

This six-movement suite has been arranged to highlight the music alone, distinct from the original extra-musical narrative of the ballet. Hence, titles of scenes and characters have been removed from the score, and the hour-long work has been condensed to an intense 25 minutes.

HackPolitik was composed for Juventas New Music Ensemble in collaboration with The People Movers Contemporary Dance, and was originally choreographed by Kate Ladenheim.
