7 Rants

for wind quintet and piano

Commissioned by the Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center at Wellesley College.

program note:

7 Rants is a series of miniatures for wind quintet and piano. The first and last movements are strictly palindromic (the last is a perfect reverse of the first). Each of the inner movements are mini-concertos for each of the five wind instruments: bassoon, flute, oboe, horn, clarinet, respectively. While the movements are all very short, each of the soloists, in some way, demands more time and attention. These "rants" occur in various forms, often as a play on the traditional idea of cadenza.

The piece was commissioned by and composed with gratitude for the 2011 Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center at Wellesley College, directed by Mario Davidovsky.
